Diabetes and Nutrition - What You Will Learn
Week One - Why Do It?
We believe knowledge is power, and that understanding the science behind the diabetes enables a person to better reduce the risks of developing serious complications. This class introduces you to the basic physiology of the disease, including diagnosis, symptoms and treatments. We will discuss the "Goals for Good Control" as defined by the American Diabetes Association--including why/when to monitor blood glucose, managing cholesterol and hypertension, as well as what to expect from and when to contact to your medical provider.
Week Two - What To Do
In this session our Registered Dietician will address the core concepts of food and nutrition in diabetes, and will help you personalize your meal plans to achieve blood glucose and weight goals.
You will find out how to keep fats, carbohydrates, and proteins in balance. You can practice reading food labels to find the information you need, learn food shopping and eating techniques.
Week Three - What To Do
There is a direct relationship between exercise and your blood sugar level. You will come to understand the benefits of exercise and plan ways to increase your activity level.
Since the relationship between your specific medication and the food you eat and the amount of exercise you get is so important, this will be examined. Each type of medication, the action it takes in your body, how long it works, and any possible side effects will all be discussed.
Another topic will be the cause, prevention, symptoms, and treatment of both hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia.
Week Four - How To Do It
By now you will better understand the importance of controlling your blood glucose, blood pressure, and lipids. You will realize the benefits of seeing your health care provider regularly as well as the importance of maintaining a healthy weight and stopping smoking. In this class you may discuss the relationship of all of these in preventing diabetes complications.
You will be able to decide the lifestyle changes you need to make and we will help you develop strategies to reduce your risk factors.
by the end of the class you will have your behavioral goals and learning goals decided and be prepared for a healthy life.
Week Five - Did I Do It?
Your class will meet again three months after the last monthly class. Here you can report your progress, set new goals, measure your A1c and ask new questions.
