Care Provider Focus: Health care on the sidelines

By John Eggers, MD
Obstetrician/Gynecologist
Cascade Valley Arlington Women's Health

Football action Look closely and you will see them on the sidelines of every high school football game. Stamping their feet, clapping their hands together, and drinking endless cups of coffee, all in an effort to stay warm. All the while keeping their attention tuned to the game, anticipating the moment they might be called upon to help an injured player.

"The providers from Cascade Valley Arlington Orthopaedics have been our 'Team Docs' the past few years," stated Steve VerHoeven, Director of Sports Medicine at Arlington High School. "While my students learn the basics of treating sports injuries, we are required by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association to have a qualified health care professional on the field for all football games."

Heather Feldbauer, PA-C and Fred Davis, MD, who both treat patients at Cascade Valley Arlington Orthopaedics, share the job of being that qualified medical provider at all the home games of the Arlington Eagles.

"Mostly what we see are ankle sprains and cramps. I'm glad none of the players have needed more care than that," commented Feldbauer. "The worst injury I have seen was a coach who slipped on the field and fractured his clavicle."

Unless you are a die-hard high school football fan, standing on the sidelines week after week shows a real dedication and commitment to the community.

"I truly enjoy working with this age group of athletes," shared Feldbauer. "I enjoy being involved in the community and using my training in Sports Medicine and Athletic Training to help them."

The next time you and your fellow spectators worry over a player who needs help to hop off the field, be reassured, the capable providers of Cascade Valley Arlington Orthopaedics are there on the sidelines.
