The Heart
Is it a pump or the seat of human emotion, the source of love as the poets and playwrights of the past purpose?
The heart has a humble beginning. As the cells begin to separate in the embryo, just four short weeks after fertilization, they begin to beat; even before the heart chambers have formed, taking on a life of their own. As development continues, a human being ends up with four heart chambers. These are complete with an electrical system directing the beat or rhythm of the heart. This system ensures the heart beats with a purpose. The heart is responsible for distributing blood to every one of our cells, delivering oxygen and nutrition. It is easy to imagine how the heart came to be viewed as the seat of emotion, the organ of love.

Occasionally there can be mistakes during development, resulting in defects in the heart structure or plumbing. There can be holes in the heart between the chambers or an incorrect number of chambers. Sometimes the valves between the chambers are inefficient or there are problems with the large blood vessels coming out of the heart. Some of these defects are detectable at birth and some may be discovered later. This is just one of many reasons to bring your child in for regular well child checkups.
Your heart is a precious commodity. It pays, in the long run, to take good care it so it can take care of you. Forming the good habits of a healthy lifestyle starts in childhood. One of the best gifts a parent can give their child is the role modeling of an active lifestyle and healthy diet. Your heart is a muscle, and like all of the muscles in your body, it responds to exercise. Make sure to talk with your health care provider about what lifestyle changes you and your family can make to take care of your hearts.
Interestingly enough, research suggests the same lifestyle choices (exercise and a healthful diet) are good for the prevention of many types of cancer, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and maybe even Alzheimer's disease. Exercise also promotes a feeling of well-being and helps with depression and anxiety.
So, parents, help your kids learn to value and care for their heart and their health. Eat well, stay active, and take your kids in for their regular checkups. Your health care provider is your partner in health care. Use them to help you get started with a healthy New Year.
Take care of your heart, and you will live and love long. All the poems and love songs can't be wrong.
